With England’s progression to the knockout rounds of Euro 2024 comes the prospect of the dreaded penalty shoot-out. And, given only four of the 11 players to have stepped up for Gareth Southgate are available in this year’s squad, he’s going to need to place his faith in some new faces.

So, who should get the nod? We’ve analysed the career records of every player at his disposal using data from transfermarkt.com – from Under-18s upwards, including shoot-outs in cup competitions – to rank them from Nos.1 to 26.

1. Harry Kane (79/90, 88% success rate)

The England captain has scored more than twice as many penalties (79) as any other member of the squad. He’s netted 15 in a row since missing against France at the World Cup and is 5/5 in shoot-outs.

2. Ivan Toney (37/40, 93% success rate)

Toney scored against Belgium in the previous international break to take his tally of successful spot kicks to 37. His rise through the EFL also means he has more shoot-out experience than anybody else (with seven successes from eight attempts).

3. Cole Palmer (15/15, 100% success rate)

‘Cold’ Palmer has ice in his veins, underlined by his signature shiver celebration. He’s yet to miss in his career – with 9/9 in the Premier League last season – and got off the mark for England in a pre-tournament friendly.

4. Bukayo Saka (16/19, 84% success rate)

Saka missed the decisive kick against Italy in the Euro 2020 final but, having since established himself as Arsenal’s first-choice taker, has only missed one of 13 penalties since (including 3/3 in shoot-outs).

5. Trent Alexander-Arnold (7/7, 100% success rate)

Trent is another member of the 100% club with a perfect seven. He’s never taken one in a senior match but was 4/4 for England Under-19 and has done the job for Liverpool in shoot-outs to decide FA Cup and EFL Cup finals and the European Super Cup.

6. Eberechi Eze (8/9, 89% success rate)

Eze missed his first ever penalty for Queens Park Rangers back in May 2019 but has scored 8/8 since then including two in the Premier League, one for England Under-21s and another in an EFL Cup shoot-out.

7. Jude Bellingham (4/4, 100% success rate)

Bellingham is another who has never missed, albeit from a smaller sample size. He’s scored two for Dortmund, one for Real Madrid and didn’t falter in a Champions League shoot-out against Man City in May.

8. Lewis Dunk (4/4, 100% success rate)

Dunk has never taken a penalty during 90 minutes but is 4/4 in shoot-outs for Brighton, including an FA Cup semi-final at Wembley. If Harry Maguire can do it…

9. Conor Gallagher (6/6, 100% success rate)

Gallagher has technically scored more penalties than Dunk with six, but five of those came for Chelsea Under-18s. His one senior penalty was in an EFL Cup shoot-out while on loan at West Brom to protect his perfect record.

10. Anthony Gordon (8/10, 80% success rate)

Having Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson as teammates means Gordon has only taken one senior penalty in normal time (which he scored). He’s 2/2 in domestic shoot-outs and 8/10 overall.

11. Phil Foden (3/4, 75% success rate)

Foden has never taken a regular penalty but has a decent record in shoot-outs including one at the Under-17 World Cup and his most recent effort for Man City against Real Madrid.

12. Jordan Pickford (1/1, 100% success rate)

Pickford became the first England goalkeeper to step up in a competitive shoot-out against Switzerland in the 2019 Nations League. He smashed that one home, and you sense he’d relish the chance to do it all over again, so he gets the nod ahead of more experienced teammates.

13. Jarrod Bowen (7/10, 70% success rate)

Bowen is a slightly patchy 6/9 at club level and hasn’t taken once since missing against Liverpool in October 2022. He did score in his one and only shoot-out against Man City in the EFL Cup, though.

14. Kieran Trippier (3/6, 50% success rate)

Trippier converted the crucial fourth against Colombia at the 2018 World Cup to help England achieve their first shoot-out win in over 20 years. His record beyond that is poor, however, missing 2/2 in normal time and in an EFL Cup shoot-out against Chelsea this season.

15. Ollie Watkins (6/11, 55% success rate)

Watkins has only scored 4/9 in matches and hasn’t been entrusted with one since missing in May 2023. He is at least 2/2 in shoot-outs, including one in the Europa Conference League this season.

16. Declan Rice (2/4, 50% success rate)

Rice was Mark Noble’s natural heir in everything but penalty taking, only scoring 1/3 for West Ham. His shoot-out success against Porto in this season’s Champions League does at least drag him up to 50%.

17. Kyle Walker (2/2, 100% success rate)

Walker is 2/2 when called upon in shoot-outs, including in the League Cup last 16 and European Super Cup against Sevilla.

18. Ezri Konsa (2/2, 100% success rate)

The same goes for Konsa, although one was for Charlton in an EFL Trophy game against Colchester United.

19. John Stones (1/1, 100% success rate)

Stones did the job the only time he’s been asked, though it was as seventh choice for Everton in an 10-9 defeat to West Ham back in January 2015.

20. Luke Shaw (1/1, 100% success rate)

Likewise, the only experience Shaw can call upon is as eighth choice in Man Utd’s 12-11 defeat to Villarreal in the 2021 Europa League final.

21. Kobbie Mainoo

Mainoo is one of four outfield players yet to take a penalty in their career. He did score five goals last season, so is no stranger to finding the net.

22. Marc Guehi

Guehi should at least be on the pitch, so saves having to make an unnecessary substitution with the game in the balance.

23. Adam Wharton

Wharton has four senior goals to his name, all of which came in the Championship.

24. Joe Gomez

Gomez has never scored a senior goal nor taken a penalty. Enough said.

25. Dean Henderson

Henderson is a big character who relishes facing penalties, so gets the nod ahead of the other substitute goalkeeper.

26. Aaron Ramsdale

Well, someone had to be last.
